Known for its iconic architecture and art, Barcelona offers historic walks and world-class museums. Even more, it’s home to the famous works of the architect, Antoni Gaudi and the artist, Pablo Picasso. I visited this popular port-of-call many times discovering all the culture Barcelona offers. So, read on to learn about the top 10 Barcelona travel attractions.
Located on the northeast coast of Spain’s Catalonia region, this city has been a hub for travel and trade for centuries. Also, the region’s landscapes are home to the Pyrenees Mountains, with lively Mediterranean coastal resorts. Barcelona is a spectacular port for many reasons, such as, nightlife, fashion and world-class museums. However, it stands out and is synonymous to its famous late Gothic architecture, especially by the unique style of Catalan Modernism by Antoni Gaudi.
Antoni Gaudi, the Famous Architect’s City
Most importantly, as a traveler, it’s best to somewhat understand the background of Antoni Gaudi, because his architecture is the skeleton of Barcelona’s unique style and culture. Thus, a Gaudi Tour is imperative, seeing his most famous buildings, such as the unfinished Sagrada Familia, Park Guell and Casa Mila. Gaudi lived from 1852-1926, deeply influenced by the neo-Gothic and Oriental techniques. Inevitably, he became part of the Modernista Movement. Overall, he innovated his own personal style, combining Gothic Architecture, Catalan Modernism and Art Noveau. Seeing these masterpieces tell you why his unique buildings attract countless architects and travelers each year.
Top 10 Barcelona Travel Attractions
La Rambla
Firstly, if Gaudi’s architecture is the skeleton of Barcelona, this tree-lined pedestrian street is the spine. La Rambla stretches 1.2 km (.75 mi) from the Christopher Columbus Monument to the Catalonia Square. Along this bustling street are endless cafes, markets, souvenir kiosks, shops and street performers. Its main attraction is Barcelona’s first and largest Food Market, La Boquria. The endless labyrinth offers a huge range of fresh produce, tapas and handicrafts. Dated back to 1217, most stalls are owned by 4th and 5th generation family members. Also, on a more cautious note, the La Rambla gets very crowded with a common problem of pickpocketing.
Barcelona Quarter
Secondly, near the La Ramblas, the charming Gothic Quarter is a must-see attraction. I found it intriguing strolling the medieval streets filled with trendy bars, clubs and Catalan restaurants. Most noteworthy, the Gothic Quarter is the venue for top historic landmarks, such as, Barcelona Cathedral, Picasso Museum and Museum of Barcelona History. Also, the Placa del Pi is named after its Gothic Church and host a weekend art market.
Gothic Cathedral
Thirdly, in the heart of the Gothic Quarter is the exquisite Gothic Cathedral. The majestic and hauntingly beautiful church was constructed from the 13th-15th centuries. Intriguingly, its roofs have gargoyles and both domestic and mythical animals. Also, its spectacular interior is open for visitors to this church dedicated to Eulalia of Barcelona, a co-patron saint.
Picasso Museum
This historic landmark is also located in Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter. The Picasso Museum houses one of the most extensive displays of the 20th century Spanish artist, Pablo Picasso.
Moreover, as the first and only museum opened in Picasso’s lifetime to display his art, it now houses 4,251 Picasso works exhibited for the public. Picasso spent his formative years in Barcelona and considered this city home more than anywhere else.
Gaudi’s Church of Sagrada Familia
Ultimately, this is Antoni Gaudi’s magnum opus as the greatest champion of Catalan Modernism. Even though it remains unfinished, this Roman Catholic Church of Sagrada Familia is his most famous monument. From 1882 to his death, Gaudi devoted his life to this project and is buried in its crypt. Furthermore, the awe-inspiring style combines Gothic and curvilinear Art Nouveau designs. Since his death in 1926, the Sagrada Familia’s construction relied on private donations. Continuing at a slow consistent pace with many setbacks from revolutions and the like, the completion date is now estimated for 2026. Thus, when visiting be prepared for cranes and scaffolding obstructing the view. Interior tours are also available.
Park Guell – Barcelona Travel Attractions
As one of the biggest green spaces in Barcelona, Park Guell spreads more than 19 hectares or the equivalent of 19 city blocks. On Carmel Hill, this public park is designed with the architectural eloquence of Gaudi, expressing harmony of nature and colorful architecture. Furthermore, Eusebi Guell assigned the park to Antoni Gaudi with the theme of Catalan Modernism along with urbanization.
Overall, the gardens are lovely and in great balance with the colorful architecture and mosaics. Also, one of my favorite buildings here is the Porter’s Pavilion, a surreal gingerbread-like house with an appearance of white frosting drooping of the roof sprinkled by colorful accents and trim.
Additionally, Gaudi designed with the colorful mosaic technique called Trencadis, using broken tiles. Thus, check out the popular mosaics, such as, the bright salamander and serpentine-tile bench at Guell Park.
Casa Mila
Another Gaudi design, this private apartment building was commissioned by Pere Mila in 1906. Casa Mila is nicknamed “The Stone Quarry” in reference to its rough appearance. At the time, this Modernist building revealed many innovations, such as, an underground garage and a spectacular terrace on the roof, that visitors still use for wonderful views of the city. Most noteworthy is its appearance, in that the intriguing stone façade undulates and the wrought iron balconies twist.
Ciutadella Park / Arc de Triomf
The Arc de Triomf is Barcelona’s triumphal arch, built as the main gate to the 1888 Barcelona World’s Fair. However, now the arch is the entrance to the 70-acre Ciutadella Park. This massive park includes iconic sites, such as, the City Zoo, a small lake, museums and a large fountain.
National Art Museum of Catalonia (MNAC)
The massive world-class National Art Museum of Catalonia is one of the best in Barcelona. Housed in a massive Italian-style, regal building on a hill are its fabulous collections, such as, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Modern Art. Most noteworthy, famous Spanish artists are exhibited here, for example, El Greco, Picasso, Gaudi and Dali. Plus, don’t miss out on the view of the city from museum’s rooftop terraces.
Viewpoints – Overall, many to choose from…
Lastly, Barcelona is a wonderful city to reflect on and see in its entirety, with a unique skyline and Gaudi’s buildings. Thus, popular viewpoints are throughout the city, such as, the MNAC, Park Guell, Tibidabo, Sagrada Familia, and Collserola Tower.
Also, Don’t Forget Tapas and Shopping!
I figure having tapas and sangrias go without saying. However, the fashion world of Barcelona caught me off guard. Here, I purchased leather coats, colorful scarves and very unique dresses. These hip, colorful dresses with busy yet intriguing geometrical patterns awakened my “inner fashionista.” Plus, taking these dresses back to the U.S., I received countless compliments on my fantastic and unique clothes that no one else wore back home.
Overall, Barcelona Travel Attractions
Beyond Barcelona’s top attractions, it’s a romantic city to explore and just wander without a plan. Even though I visited this port-of-call many times, I often just intentionally wandered and wondered with no plan, open to possibilities and surprises. Ultimately, this is how I discovered the real Barcelona, transcending its very own attractions.
