The Lofoten Islands inspire with unique natural beauty, blending floral, lush landscapes and pristine fjords.  Even though it’s above the Arctic Circle, midnight sun enables a colorful superbloom of wildflowers in the summer.  I spent a solo, tour-free day at the port, Gravdal.  So, read on to learn what I discovered about the plant life and fiords on a beautiful Lofoten Islands walking tour.

Lofoten is an archipelago inside the Arctic Circle of Norway.  It’s known for landscapes of pristine scenery, such as, sheltered bays, beaches and fjords. The mountains are very rugged in jagged shapes of high granite.  Because of the Gulf Stream, this area is significantly warmer than other places of the same latitude.  Furthermore, along the coastline it never freezes.

From May to July there is the Midnight Sun and in contrast, from September to April the Northern Lights.  Thus, there is always something wonderful to experience here that connects you with nature.  Also, Unstad Beach on Vestvagoy Island is a hotspot for cold water surfing.  For me, I loved most the superbloom of wildflowers during the long days of summer here.  Also, fishing is the main reason people live here.  Thus, Lofoten is known for its charming fishing villages.

Gradval village is located on Vestvagoya Island.  It’s along the shore of the stunning Buksnesfjorden. I walked literally for 8 hours that day and just took photos and enjoyed the beautiful scenery.  It’s rare to find a place with so much pristine wilderness, that is still sparsely populated.  Overall, I followed walking trails through flower meadows, near farms with grazing horses and sheep, with intermingling rocky coastal shores and marshlands.

The long days from May to August create a superbloom effect with wildflowers galore.  Therefore, I observed many flowers, such as, purple lupines, magenta fireweed, pink tufted saxifrage, arctic cotton grass and yellow snow buttercup.

In contrast, the mountainous horizon with the craggy shorelines’ granite boulders are fun to observe and in some areas climb.  Overall, I spent my day meandering, observing and just connecting with the abundance of nature.  Truly a serene day that I will never forget.

Additionally, I observed from a distance the striking red, wooden, Dragestil “Dragon Style” Buksnes Church built in a long church style in 1905.   It has a commanding presence along the shoreline’s horizon.
