Vanuatu Travel Destinations

Vanuatu Travel Destinations of Efate Island explore a pristine Pacific island paradise.  With beautiful blue lagoons, coral beaches, shipwreck dives, lush rainforests, waterfalls and a Kava Culture, Vanuatu is a one-of-kind destination.    Read on to learn why the people of Vanuatu have been recognized as some of the happiest people on Earth.

Background of Vanuatu

Located in the South Pacific Ocean, the Republic of Vanuatu comprises about 80 islands.  It is a wonderful destination for snorkeling and scuba diving among the stunning coral reefs. Vanuatu’s varied landscapes include mountains, active volcanoes, underwater volcanoes, waterfalls and lush rainforests. Vanuatu means “Our Land Forever.” Overall, its dense linguistics encompass 139 indigenous languages.  During WW II, Vanuatu was an important U.S. military base.  So, there are iconic shipwreck dives, including the noteworthy SS President Coolidge.  Espiritu Santo is the largest island of Vanuatu.

Efate is the most populous island with the national capital, Port Vila.  The city is home to the Vanuatu National Museum, exploring the Melanesian culture.  Efate is also an important travel hub connecting to the island’s numerous sandy, white beaches and blue lagoons.   From Port Villa, Air Vanuatu goes to outer islands, for example, Tanna and Santo are popular destinations.  Also, the reality show, Survivor, filmed 3 seasons on the island, Efate.

Why is Vanuatu One of the Happiest Places on Earth?

Vanuatu consistently ranks high (4th in 2020) on the Happy Planet Index, based on countries.  Whatever you do here, take some time to connect with the people, as they overall more relaxed and kind than many other parts of the world.  Spend a day here and you realize why.  The natural beauty and diversity brings out the best in everyone!  Also, the Kava Culture enhances all the good with an herbal medicine for socializing instead of drugs or alcohol.  Something to think about.

Do you ever wish to escape on a deserted island in the South Pacific? Well, Mystery Island travel is the closest I have ever come to that wish.   Overall, this uninhabited island makes for a great daytrip to enjoy its relaxed setting, with awesome beaches for snorkeling and swimming.  As an Acupuncturist-at-Sea, I spent a couple days exploring here and love sharing Mystery Island travel tips.

    Mystery Island Background

As the southernmost island of Vanuatu, this small island is uninhabited with no cars.  It is just 1 km long and 200 meters wide.  Furthermore, the beach village is called Aneityum, with markets and food stands. The island is surrounded by beautiful coral reefs for snorkeling.  Also, interestingly the name Mystery Island was bestowed by Queen Elizabeth II.  The story goes that she called it “Mystery Island,” after visiting in 1975 on the Royal Yacht Brittania.  Cruise ships anchor in the bay, stopping here for day excursions.  Also, Air Vanuatu flies here from Port Vila, landing on the grass landing field.

Browse the local markets for souvenirs, produce, postcards and swimming gear. It’s good to support the Vanuatu people.

Explore the tropical plant life and endemic flora.

Finally, watch a plane land or take off at the Mystery Island Airport’s grass runway.
