Indonesia Travel Destinations

Indonesia travel destinations include  Indonesia’s Komodo Dragons a like a surreal experience in Jurassic Park.  The Komodo National Park protects this largest reptile species on earth and offer tours to see them in their habitat.  Also, the dramatic setting of these islands and coral reefs is where visitors dive, snorkel and hike.  As an Acupuncturist-at-Sea, I spent a day at these exotic reptile and love sharing my experience and tips.

Komodo Dragons aka the Komodo monitor is the largest species of lizard on earth, found in the Indonesian islands, Komodo, Flores, Rinca and Gil Motang.  These creatures grow in lengths up to 3 metres long and run up to 30 km/hour.  They dominate their ecosystems and ambush their prey, including mammals and birds.  Also, their bite is venomous  and they (although rarely) attack humans.

Komodo National Park protects these reptiles and available for tours  up close and personal with guides.   This park is one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature and there’s a lot more to it than just the Komodo Dragons.  It’s also part of the Coral Triangle with some of the most biodiverse marine life in the world.  Therefore, visitors also come here for diving and snorkeling.  Additionally, the neighboring Flores Island is renown for its epic hiking and views of lush green mountains and turquoise harbors.

Exotic Komodo Dragons Indonesia Tour, Seeing the Largest Reptiles on Earth

Seeing Komodo Dragons is a surreal experience, like you’re on the movie set of Jurassic Park.  The Komodo National Park protects this largest reptile species on earth and offer tours to see them in their habitat.  Also, the dramatic setting of these islands and coral reefs includes world-class diving, snorkeling and hiking.  Here’s my experience and tips on a Komodo Dragons Indonesia Tour.

    Komodo Dragons and Islands

Komodo National Park is dedicated to protecting these reptiles and offers tours to see them up close and personal with guides.   This park is one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. Plus, there’s a lot more to it than just the Komodo Dragons.  It’s, also, part of the Coral Triangle with some of the most biodiverse marine life in the world.  Therefore, visitors come here for diving and snorkeling.  Additionally, the neighboring Flores Island is renowned for its epic hiking and views of lush green mountains and turquoise harbors.

Tip for Women Seeing the Komodo Dragons – You are not allowed to take the tour if you’re menstruating at time of tour, because Komodo’s have a good sense of smell for blood and may attack.

My ship organized a crew tour at Komodo National Park to see the dragons.  Our group followed the guides to the area where they cohabitate in a woody area of shade.  The Guides carried a long stick for warding off dragons if necessary.  We observed and walked a loop for about an hour, seeing a group of 8-10 Komodo dragons.  They scattered in the brush, and many seemed to pair up.  Only a couple times did our Guides use their sticks to keep the dragons from approaching us.  We had a responsible group keeping away and just observing the creatures.

I got some awesome pictures.  The dragons have really long, bifurcated tongues that they flail out intermittently, activating their sense of smell. And their claws are massive and wickedly sharp.  Also, I observed some slime or drool dangling from one of their mouths.  Their teeth are shark-like sharp with a venomous bite, that would kill a human in hours.  Definitely, one of the most ferocious looking animals that I have ever seen.

What else to do on these islands, besides seeing the dragons…

    Flores
    Flores Island

The islands of Komodo and Flores are also home to some of the best diving and snorkeling in the world among the coral triangle.  Our snorkeling tour was canceled for weather reasons. I was, however, mesmerized by Flores Island, next to the Komodo Island and got some fantastic photos from our ship. Furthermore, Komondo National Park has the unique pink-sandy beach.  This is caused by a pink/red pigment on the coral reefs and the broken reef pieces wash on the beach.  Additionally, other highlights include the absolutely stunning Padar Viewpoint and the 3-color volcanic Kelimutu Lake.

    Overall, Komodo Dragons Indonesia Tour

This is such an incredible opportunity to see such exotic creatures in their natural habitat. And the surrounding beauty of these islands is magical, with world-class snorkeling and diving as well. In contrast to the modern world of WIFI and technology, Komodo National Park is such an escape to a prehistoric reality capturing anyone’s imagination.

Saint Sava is the founder of the Serbian Orthodox church. The church’s construction lasted from 1935 to 1989. It became delayed by WW II and the Yugoslavian communism, that didn’t allow for building churches.

Shaped like a Greek Cross, the facade consists of white marble and granite in a Neo-Byzantine style. Its dome is one of the largest in the world. The mosaics are spectacular, with the central mosaic in the dome depicting the Ascension of Jesus.

Just 15 minutes from Mostar is the Blagaj Dervish Just 15 minutes from Mostar is the Blagaj Dervish Monastery. It sits at the source of the Buna River which flows out of a cave beneath a canyon wall. The beautiful tekke (lodge) displays Ottoman Sufi architecture from the 15th century.

The white building reflects on the turquoise river. Inside you’ll find a small mosque, guest rooms and mausoleums. Dervishes of the Sufi orders stayed here for spiritual retreats over the centuries. Today, it is open for tourist of all faiths to learn about this sacred site and the Sufi tradition.

We explored the riverside and view of Blagaj from across the river. Also, with our shoes off, we enjoyed an indoor tour of the monastery.

Mostar is a gorgeous gem of the Balkans. Its uniqu Mostar is a gorgeous gem of the Balkans. Its unique blend of cultural diversity, riveting history and natural beauty offers an inspiring escape. I traveled solo in Mostar for 2 days, exploring the Old Town along with day trips. Mostar's main attraction is the bridge jumping tradition.

The iconic Stari Most is the symbol of Mostar and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in Balkan Islamic architecture in the 16th century, its height is 24 m (78 ft 9 in). The bridge connects the two sides of the city divided by the Neretva River. During the Balkan War, the bridge was destroyed. However, it became rebuilt in 2004 with the stones from the original bridge. The bridge is steep and slippery with crowds often on it. So, wear good shoes and be aware when taking in its incredible views of the city and river.

The main attraction in Mostar is watching the tradition of locals jumping off the Stari Most into the river. This began in 1664 as a rite-of-passage for 16-year-old boys. Today, young men from the Mostar Diving Club take the plunge. Leading up to the plunge, assistants gather donations from the crowds.

After 3 days in Sarajevo, I wholeheartedly get why After 3 days in Sarajevo, I wholeheartedly get why National Geographic named it Top Destination for 2025. Here, east meets west with a fascinating blend of Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian influences. However, wounds from the 90’s Bosnian War are still healing. Afterall, Sarajevo suffered the longest siege (almost 4 years) in modern warfare by the Bosnian Serbs. Thankfully, its citizens’ resilience prevailed otherwise.

The Plitvice Lakes National Park is located in cen The Plitvice Lakes National Park is located in central Croatia’s mountainous karst area. It’s the largest national park in the country and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park is world-famous for its 16 turquoise, tufa lakes connected by 90 cascades and waterfalls.
