Denmark Travel Destinations:
Experiencing Copenhagen’s Top Ten Attractions  is best through the Quest for Hygge.  If you visit Denmark’s capital, looking for its biggest tourist attraction, the Little Mermaid Statue, you will return home thinking Copenhagen is just any other European city.  During my weeklong visit, I pursued a quest for the meaning of the Danish custom, Hygge.  Plus, I discovered firsthand why Copenhagen is called the “City of Spires” and world-renowned for bicycling.
What is Hygge?
Pronounced “hoo-guh,” Hygge is a traditional custom in both Denmark and Norway. Even though it has no direct translation, “cozy” comes close.  It comes from the Norwegian term, hugga meaning to comfort, related to the English word hug. Furthermore, it’s experienced through simple, sensual comforts and social conviviality, such as, sharing a delicious meal, good wine, a nap in the park, gardening, candles, fireplaces or a sunset.   Hygge is all about life in the moment and connecting to other people and your surroundings.  I perceive it as the European version of Zen.

If you visit Copenhagen through its cultural lens of Hygge,  authenticly experience, it, even as a Tourist.  Look for it in the restaurants, cafes, alleyways, bicycling, gardens, flowers, friendliness, and relaxation.  In other words, quest for this cozy custom in all you do in this unique city.

Tivoli Gardens

As the second oldest amusement park in the world, this Danish venue also has a pleasure garden.  It’s right next door to the Central Rail Station. This park is best known for its wooden roller coaster, Rutschebanen aka Bjergbanen (The Mountain Coaster), built in 1914. It’s one of the world’s oldest wooden roller coasters that is still operating today.  Additionally, the colorful flower gardens and trees provide a beautiful alcove for peaceful relaxation.

Cruising Greenland’s Prince Christian Sound Highlights

    Entrance to Prince Christian Sound

The dramatic passage of Greenland’s Prince Christian Sound takes you on a journey through untouched waters. Humbly, I cruised through the pristine waters, fjords, glaciers & canyons of Prince Christian Sound. Being at the southernmost tip of Greenland, the summers are more comfortably warm and dry with daytime highs in the 50’s. So, I experienced a bright, sunny day out on the deck of a ship for my introduction to remote Greenland.

    About Greenland’s Prince Christian Sound

Mother Earth’s largest island, Greenland, is home to the second largest ice sheet, covering 80 percent of its land mass. It is a constituent of the Kingdom of Denmark. Prince Christian Sound separates the mainland from Cape Farewell Archipelago, the southernmost tip of Greenland.

Furthermore, the sound connects the Labrador Sea on the west with the Irminger Sea on the east. Overall, its long, narrow fjord system of 100 km (60 miles), at times as narrow as 500 m (1500 ft) wide, flows through steep canyons of granite over 1200 feet.

At least 6 fjords offshoot from the sound. Asppilattoq, an Inuit town, is the only settlement along the sound. There are many glaciers’ endcaps going straight up to the water’s edge, calving icebergs. Consequently, these giant chunks of ice drift randomly throughout the waters. Also, there are strong tidal currents, limiting the formation of ice.

The explorer, John Cabot described the sound as ‘a river of melted snow.’ Overall, it is much warmer and dryer than expectations of Greenland. However, it is at the southernmost tip, at roughly the same latitude as Anchorage Alaska.

Cruising Prince Christian Sound – A Surreal Experience

    3

My 8-hour passage journey is breathtaking and hauntingly beautiful; however, it shatters my expectations. Before, my thoughts of Greenland conjured up images of ice sheets, glaciers and uninhabitable, snowy landscapes.

This August day is a clear, sunny day with temperatures almost reaching 60 degrees F. Unexpectantly, it reveals barren, dry canyons, meltwater rivers and shrinking glaciers. However, it’s the southernmost tip of Greenland at the end of summer.

My experience may reveal the foreboding effects of global warming, as a microcosm for our planet. Even though climate change may be a tragic reality to this remote place, the omnipotence of Mother Nature shined on, anyway, giving us a truly magical day.

From the Irminger Sea, cruising into the east entrance of the fjord, marine animations to greet us. The sky is startlingly clear-blue with no clouds. The clouds seem, instead, to appear on the water as floating icebergs. Random islands, protrude in granite with grayish-green patches of lichen and snow.

Galvanizing everything is the lively whale activity! In the distance, there are playful spouts and flukes splashing all around us. Even though the whales remain at a distance, it’s exhilarating to know they’re near enough for a glimpse of their healing presence.

My Journey at Greenland’s Prince Christian Sound

Immersing ourselves in the granite labyrinth feels like a prehistoric journey through nature’s deep, primal past. Geological features of the canyon’s contours and colors shapeshift into visions, reflecting on the water as an eerie beauty.

The cobalt blue sky is a pretty contrast to the ash-grey granite along the way. Icebergs nonchalantly float, as mirages of ethereal clouds. The white-blue glaciers mutely touch the water’s edge, reflecting upon themselves shimmering patterns on the sound.

The still, mild air is a transparent host to the pristine scenery. Ancient majesty creates a sense of calm, so eloquent, that words are unnecessary. The spiritual spark of nature’s perfection speaks for itself. I feel peace flow through me as a slipstream to oneness. Nature is a vector for spiritual guidance.

Meltwater rivers and cascades fall down
the granite walls into the wake.

I sense a magnetic charge from the rock’s sparkling quartz pull us through the eye of the needle, instead of the ship pushing through it. There’s a deep surrender to the mystery of the unknown… Nature awakens beatitude, beholding the wilderness, so the mindstream is the truth, with no separation from expressing the moment, as words are the inherent offspring of now.

After 8 hours of enchantment, exiting out the fjord into the Labrador Sea, feels like leaving a secret sanctuary, where few humans have been and reluctantly, transitioning back to reality into the Atlantic Ocean…like we have been through a birthing process, reborn back into the open sea…

After we finished our cruise, we spent the next day at Greenland’s seaport, Qaqortoq on the southwestern coast. Catching this gem on a sunny day was one of the most colorful and fun days of my life.

If ever there was a time to reconnect with America If ever there was a time to reconnect with American Democracy, it is NOW! Boston is the perfect place known as the "Cradle of Liberty," with many firsts for the USA.

I decided to unplug from the current political reality and celebrate the U.S. historical roots on Independence Day 2025! I visited many historic sites on Boston's Freedom Trail, listened to 2 readings of the Declaration of Independence, interacted with people in colonial costumes and parades.

It was a bittersweet day with many tears and the realization that I have taken democracy for granted. However, I will never let that happen again! I feel more patriotic than ever to make sure the blood, sweat and tears over the last 249 years were not in vain.

Here are the 19 historic sites on the Freedom Trail. For more details, check out my blog:

The world-famous Gouda cheese is named after a cit The world-famous Gouda cheese is named after a city in the heart of the Dutch green lands. Imagine this, the city is just as delectable as the cheese. I am thrilled to share my Gouda Netherlands cheese tour highlights at the city and cheese farm. So, read on and discover reasons why Gouda is the ultimate foodie and cultural tour.

The city Gouda lies in the province of South Holland in the Netherlands. It’s named after the Gouwe River that it surrounds. The city became known for the Gouda cheese traded in its market square. Furthermore, Gouda is famous for stroopwafels, grachten or canals, smoking pipes and its 15th century city hall. Originally, it was a marshland in the 13th century. Later, a canal was built and its estuary became a harbor.

On the Vracar plateau, the Church of Saint Sava is On the Vracar plateau, the Church of Saint Sava is the largest Orthodox church in the Balkans and second largest in the world. Saint Sava is the founder of the Serbian Orthodox church. The church’s construction lasted from 1935 to 1989. It became delayed by WW II and the Yugoslavian communism, that didn’t allow for building churches.

Shaped like a Greek Cross, the facade consists of white marble and granite in a Neo-Byzantine style. Its dome is one of the largest in the world. The mosaics are spectacular, with the central mosaic in the dome depicting the Ascension of Jesus.

Just 15 minutes from Mostar is the Blagaj Dervish Just 15 minutes from Mostar is the Blagaj Dervish Monastery. It sits at the source of the Buna River which flows out of a cave beneath a canyon wall. The beautiful tekke (lodge) displays Ottoman Sufi architecture from the 15th century.

The white building reflects on the turquoise river. Inside you’ll find a small mosque, guest rooms and mausoleums. Dervishes of the Sufi orders stayed here for spiritual retreats over the centuries. Today, it is open for tourist of all faiths to learn about this sacred site and the Sufi tradition.

We explored the riverside and view of Blagaj from across the river. Also, with our shoes off, we enjoyed an indoor tour of the monastery.
