Denmark Travel Destinations:
Experiencing Copenhagen’s Top Ten Attractions  is best through the Quest for Hygge.  If you visit Denmark’s capital, looking for its biggest tourist attraction, the Little Mermaid Statue, you will return home thinking Copenhagen is just any other European city.  During my weeklong visit, I pursued a quest for the meaning of the Danish custom, Hygge.  Plus, I discovered firsthand why Copenhagen is called the “City of Spires” and world-renowned for bicycling.
What is Hygge?
Pronounced “hoo-guh,” Hygge is a traditional custom in both Denmark and Norway. Even though it has no direct translation, “cozy” comes close.  It comes from the Norwegian term, hugga meaning to comfort, related to the English word hug. Furthermore, it’s experienced through simple, sensual comforts and social conviviality, such as, sharing a delicious meal, good wine, a nap in the park, gardening, candles, fireplaces or a sunset.   Hygge is all about life in the moment and connecting to other people and your surroundings.  I perceive it as the European version of Zen.

If you visit Copenhagen through its cultural lens of Hygge,  authenticly experience, it, even as a Tourist.  Look for it in the restaurants, cafes, alleyways, bicycling, gardens, flowers, friendliness, and relaxation.  In other words, quest for this cozy custom in all you do in this unique city.

Tivoli Gardens

As the second oldest amusement park in the world, this Danish venue also has a pleasure garden.  It’s right next door to the Central Rail Station. This park is best known for its wooden roller coaster, Rutschebanen aka Bjergbanen (The Mountain Coaster), built in 1914. It’s one of the world’s oldest wooden roller coasters that is still operating today.  Additionally, the colorful flower gardens and trees provide a beautiful alcove for peaceful relaxation.

Charming Aarhus, Denmark Walking Tour Highlights

    by Trudy Wendelin, L.Ac January 3, 2026
    written by Trudy Wendelin, L.Ac

Aarhus is a wonderful setting to explore Danish history and modern culture.  It’s Denmark’s second largest city and one of the oldest cities in Scandinavia.  Yet it’s compact enough for an interesting walking tour.   I enjoyed my day here and love sharing my Aarhus Denmark highlights tour.  So, read on to learn about what to see and do in this charming city.

On the Jutland peninsula’s east coast on the mouth of the Aarhus River, Aarhus is about 187 km north of Copenhagen.  Overall, there is plenty to see on a walking tour with many historic buildings, romantic canals, museums, sculpture, shops and cafes.  I started my day off at the Den Gamle By early before the crowds set in and then followed this path outlined in this article.

    Aarhus Denmark Highlights Tour

    Den Gamle By-4

    Den Gamle By (Old Town)

Opening at 10:00 am, Den Gamle By is a must-see living museum in Arhus and the first open-air museum of urban history in the world.  It has more than 80 houses dating back from 1600 to 1970.  These houses were collected from all over Denmark.  Overall, the authentic setting includes large cobblestone pathways, 34 workshops, pharmacy, school, post office and the theatre hosts opera performances, chamber concerts and festivals.

    Den Gamle By-2

There are even bakeries with cakes based on pre 1885 recipes and a vintage car dealership.  People are dressed in costumes and visitors can catch a horse and coach ride throughout the cobblestone roads.  Also, there is the Danish Poster Museum, the Silver Collection, Toy Museum and Aarhus Story.

    Botanical Garden

    Den Gamle By-3

Lying adjacent to Den Gamle By is the Aarhus Botanical Garden.  Trails take you through about 21.5 acres (53 acres) of gardens.  Originally, this was created for the studies at Aarhus University.  So, all the plants are labeled in both English and Danish.   These gardens are both beautiful and educational for an insightful walking tour.   In addition, there is a large greenhouse in the center, an open-air Amphitheatre and 2 ponds.

    Aarhus Canal

    Arhus Canal

Throughout the city is this remarkable Aarus Canal.  Numerous eclectic cafes, restaurants and shops line up along the canal.  This is a great place to have a meal or just relax for a bit.  Also, there is areas with seating to just sit and take it all in.

AROS Modern Art Museum and Rainbow Bridge

    AROS

The AROS Museum is another must-see in Aarhus.  One of it’s highlights is the Rainbow Panorama Walkway on the roof of the museum.  This circular walkway takes you through the spectrum of color with vibrant, panoramic views of the city.  Also, on the roof is a café with seating to take it all in.  This was designed by Icelander, Olafur Eliasson.  Inside the museum has 10 floors with paintings, sculptures, installations, art videos and drawings.

Other Landmarks for a Walking Tour

I also walked by the Aarhus Cathedral, Denmark’s longest and tallest church.  Its belltower stands at 310 feet and the interior has gorgeous frescoes from 14th and 15th centuries.   The Latin Quarter is the city’s oldest district with 18th century merchant houses and courtyards.  Also, the Town Hall is incredible and covered in Norwegian marble.

    Enjoy Aarhus!

This town is a perfect day tour.   I loved that it is so compact with all the highlights within walking distance from each other.  This is not Copenhagen or Stockholm, but the charm and convenience of this marvel make it just as wonderful.  If your travels bring you to Aarhus, feel free to leave tips or suggestions below.

If ever there was a time to reconnect with America If ever there was a time to reconnect with American Democracy, it is NOW! Boston is the perfect place known as the "Cradle of Liberty," with many firsts for the USA.

I decided to unplug from the current political reality and celebrate the U.S. historical roots on Independence Day 2025! I visited many historic sites on Boston's Freedom Trail, listened to 2 readings of the Declaration of Independence, interacted with people in colonial costumes and parades.

It was a bittersweet day with many tears and the realization that I have taken democracy for granted. However, I will never let that happen again! I feel more patriotic than ever to make sure the blood, sweat and tears over the last 249 years were not in vain.

Here are the 19 historic sites on the Freedom Trail. For more details, check out my blog:

The world-famous Gouda cheese is named after a cit The world-famous Gouda cheese is named after a city in the heart of the Dutch green lands. Imagine this, the city is just as delectable as the cheese. I am thrilled to share my Gouda Netherlands cheese tour highlights at the city and cheese farm. So, read on and discover reasons why Gouda is the ultimate foodie and cultural tour.

The city Gouda lies in the province of South Holland in the Netherlands. It’s named after the Gouwe River that it surrounds. The city became known for the Gouda cheese traded in its market square. Furthermore, Gouda is famous for stroopwafels, grachten or canals, smoking pipes and its 15th century city hall. Originally, it was a marshland in the 13th century. Later, a canal was built and its estuary became a harbor.

On the Vracar plateau, the Church of Saint Sava is On the Vracar plateau, the Church of Saint Sava is the largest Orthodox church in the Balkans and second largest in the world. Saint Sava is the founder of the Serbian Orthodox church. The church’s construction lasted from 1935 to 1989. It became delayed by WW II and the Yugoslavian communism, that didn’t allow for building churches.

Shaped like a Greek Cross, the facade consists of white marble and granite in a Neo-Byzantine style. Its dome is one of the largest in the world. The mosaics are spectacular, with the central mosaic in the dome depicting the Ascension of Jesus.

Just 15 minutes from Mostar is the Blagaj Dervish Just 15 minutes from Mostar is the Blagaj Dervish Monastery. It sits at the source of the Buna River which flows out of a cave beneath a canyon wall. The beautiful tekke (lodge) displays Ottoman Sufi architecture from the 15th century.

The white building reflects on the turquoise river. Inside you’ll find a small mosque, guest rooms and mausoleums. Dervishes of the Sufi orders stayed here for spiritual retreats over the centuries. Today, it is open for tourist of all faiths to learn about this sacred site and the Sufi tradition.

We explored the riverside and view of Blagaj from across the river. Also, with our shoes off, we enjoyed an indoor tour of the monastery.
