Alaska Travel Destinations
A Glacier Bay Alaska cruise indomitably remains one of my most epic travel experiences as an Acupuncturist-at-Sea.  I reveled in the opportunity to witness, this crowning jewel of the SE Alaskan Inside Passage, more than 20 times.  The stunning Glacier Bay National Park & Reserve lives up to its name with 50+ named glaciers.  Also, this remote paradise is only accessible by air or sea, with no roads to its grandeur.   Read on to learn about what highlights to expect when cruising Glacier Bay…
Alaska Travel Destinations
A Glacier Bay Alaska cruise is truly one of the most humbling experiences.  Here, the power of nature is larger than life, displaying the splendor and wildness of Mother Earth at her grandest.  Everywhere you look is a site to beholden, with soaring and glaciated, snow-capped mountains, deep fiords, tidewater glaciers, icebergs, abundant marine and terrestrial wildlife, all while on a journey through crystal clear turquoise waters…Here all of life’s problems dissolve into the infinite wildness of the moment here and now.  By just being here the body, mind and soul cleanses and immerses the 5 senses in a healing journey…

Glacier Bay basin splits into the eastern and western arms.  Most cruises navigate the Western Arm, with the most dramatic tidewater glaciers. While cruising Glacier Bay, the 50+ glaciers (tidewater and landlocked) are all around you.  Think of glaciers as slow moving rivers of ice.  The 7 tidewater glaciers dramatically terminate along the shores as a snout hundreds of feet high with stunning blue ice.  Glacier Bay’s tidewater glaciers astound as some of the most impressive in the world.  Seven of these glaciers are reported to be active tidewater glaciers, displaying the calving phenomenon.   Calving is when glaciers dramatically break off into icebergs plunging into the sea with thundering noise raising large waves.

Pristine Sitka, Alaska’s Top Ten Things to Do

    by Trudy Wendelin, L.Ac April 13, 2025
    written by Trudy Wendelin, L.Ac

Surrounded by the majestic mountains and Tongass Rainforest, reflecting on the waters of the harbor, Sitka is a pristine setting to explore.  And the charming town also has fascinating culture and art.  Experiencing Sitka Alaska’s top attractions connects you with nature and its beauty, along with the historic Tlingit and Russian cultures.

Sitka is on the Alaskan Panhandle, spreading out over Baranof and Chichagof Islands.  These islands are part of the Alexander Archipelago on the Pacific Ocean.  It was part of Russia until 1867. Furthermore, Imperial Russia was the dominant power in the North Pacific for over 125 years, and Sitka was the Russian colonial capital. The Sitka National Historical Park is the site, where Russia defeated the indigenous Tlingit people.  In addition, Sitka was a major sea otter fur trade area in the 19th century.  The sea otters were almost hunted to extinction. Today, the sea otter population still remains threatened.

    IMG_5697

Sitka is surrounded by mountains, including the dormant volcano, Mt. Edgecumbe. Other 3 mountains standing out in the sound’s skyline are Big Sister (Faith), Middle Sister (Charity) and Little Sister (Hope).  In addition, Sitka is immersed in the lush Tongass National Forest, the world’s largest temperate rainforest.

Sitka is one of my favorite destinations for just relaxing and connecting with nature. Firstly, I want to give a shout out to my favorite place for coffee, homemade meals and good books:  Old Harbor Books and Back Door Café.

    Sitka Alaska’s Top Ten Attractions

    IMG_0322

    Sitka National Historical Park:

Also called Totem Park, this is Alaska’s oldest national park.  It’s the site of the last battle between the Tlingit and Russians in 1804.

Along the scenic coastal walk are incredible Tlingit and Haida totem poles. Their artistic display of stories retell the native heritage.  Also, there’s a restored Russian Bishop’s House open for tours of the former orphanage.

    Sea Otters
    Sea Otters in Sitka Sound

Wildlife Boat Tour: These boat tours are extraordinary for both the marine wildlife and the scenic background of Tongass Rainforest and mountains, like the dormant volcano, Mount Edgecumbe.  In the Sitka Sound there is abundant marine life, such as, sea otters, seals, dolphins and whales.  My best boat tours involved seeing sea otters and the humpback whales.

Hundreds of Humpback’s in Sitka Sound in September

Most noteworthy, is not to miss whale-watching in September.   Most of the humpback whales congregate in Sitka Sound before migrating to Hawaii and Mexico.  It’s incredible to see whale spray (called ‘blow’) from endless blowholes everywhere throughout the sound.  Overall, this was one of the most exhilarating experiences of my life with so many whales, literally hundreds in the sound.

There is an Alaska Raptor Center in both Sitka and Ketchikan.

Bald Eagle Portrait - Alaska Raptor Center - Sitka, Alaska
Bald Eagle Portrait from Raptor Center

Alaska Raptor Center:    Here they rescue and rehabilitate about 200 injured raptors/year.  If they are not able to be rehabilitated, then the raptors live out their lives at the center.   They also perform research on raptors, particularly the bald eagles.  Overall, the center aims to educate the public and visitors.

Fortress of the Bear: In Alaska orphaned cubs are often shot, because there is no alternative.  However, Fortress of the Bear aims to fill this gap, by rescuing cubs and giving them health and a along life.  The rescue center currently has 8 bears.  Here, visitors observe from a viewing platform the bears in their native habitat, a ¾ acre area of Tongass Rainforest.

Baranof Castle State:   Also called Castle Hill, this park was originally a fortification site by the Tlingit natives.  Then Russia occupied the hill from 1804 – 1867.  Most noteworthy, this is where Alaska became officially transferred from Russia to the United States in 1867.  This hill has walking trails to the top with panoramic views of the town and harbor.

    St. Michael’s Cathedral:

St Michael's Russian Cathedral - Sitka, Alaska
    St. Michael’s Cathedral

This Russian Orthodox Cathedral was built in the 19th century and includes an iconic onion dome. Also, this was the first Orthodox Cathedral built in North America. It’s in the heart of downtown Sitka.

Sitka Sound Science Centre: This center is a non-profit organization dedicated to research and education.  It includes an Aquarium and hatchery.  There are various exhibits, such as, a touch tank and a 60-feet deep aquarium showcasing various fish, such as, sculpins, rockfish and the resident wolf eel named Wanda.  In addition, there’s a skeleton dislay of a killer whale.

Island Artist’s Gallery:  This showcases a cooperative of 25 local artists, offering samples of authentic Alaskan art for sale and viewing.  There are various handmade artworks, such as, watercolors, paintings, jewelry and clay pots.  This is a great place to shop for souvenirs or gifts.

Overall, there are numerous breathtaking trails among the Tongass Rainforest and mountainous terrain with rewarding views of the sound.

    IMG_0323

Hiking the Sitka Trails:    Beaver Lake and Herring Cove Trail Loop is a 3-mile easy path for families with picnic tables and places to enjoy the view.   Also, Starrigavan Recreation area is a moderate must-see for birders that’s over 3 miles long, including boardwalks over marshes.  Another more difficult hike is Mount Edgecumbe, accessible by sea taxi to Kruzof Island.  It takes you upwards 3,200 feet, over 7 miles to spectacular views of the crater and surrounding area.

    IMG_0397
    Mt. Edgecumbe

Kayak or Canoe on Sitka Sound:  With the backdrop of the lush Tongass Rainforest among rugged mountains Sitka Sound is one of the most picturesque places to take a kayak or canoe ride.  Also, many rewarding destinations are only available by kayak.  Sitka Sound Ocean Adventures offers various water tours and expeditions to experience the essence of this region on water.

Overall, Sitka Alaska’s Top Ten Attractions

Sitka is the ideal hub from which to enjoy the wilderness, sound and wildlife in the area. There is something for everyone from shopping for art to kayaking the sound.  Just remember, always have a raincoat as you never know when the weather will change.

The world-famous Gouda cheese is named after a cit The world-famous Gouda cheese is named after a city in the heart of the Dutch green lands. Imagine this, the city is just as delectable as the cheese. I am thrilled to share my Gouda Netherlands cheese tour highlights at the city and cheese farm. So, read on and discover reasons why Gouda is the ultimate foodie and cultural tour.

The city Gouda lies in the province of South Holland in the Netherlands. It’s named after the Gouwe River that it surrounds. The city became known for the Gouda cheese traded in its market square. Furthermore, Gouda is famous for stroopwafels, grachten or canals, smoking pipes and its 15th century city hall. Originally, it was a marshland in the 13th century. Later, a canal was built and its estuary became a harbor.

On the Vracar plateau, the Church of Saint Sava is On the Vracar plateau, the Church of Saint Sava is the largest Orthodox church in the Balkans and second largest in the world. Saint Sava is the founder of the Serbian Orthodox church. The church’s construction lasted from 1935 to 1989. It became delayed by WW II and the Yugoslavian communism, that didn’t allow for building churches.

Shaped like a Greek Cross, the facade consists of white marble and granite in a Neo-Byzantine style. Its dome is one of the largest in the world. The mosaics are spectacular, with the central mosaic in the dome depicting the Ascension of Jesus.

Just 15 minutes from Mostar is the Blagaj Dervish Just 15 minutes from Mostar is the Blagaj Dervish Monastery. It sits at the source of the Buna River which flows out of a cave beneath a canyon wall. The beautiful tekke (lodge) displays Ottoman Sufi architecture from the 15th century.

The white building reflects on the turquoise river. Inside you’ll find a small mosque, guest rooms and mausoleums. Dervishes of the Sufi orders stayed here for spiritual retreats over the centuries. Today, it is open for tourist of all faiths to learn about this sacred site and the Sufi tradition.

We explored the riverside and view of Blagaj from across the river. Also, with our shoes off, we enjoyed an indoor tour of the monastery.

Mostar is a gorgeous gem of the Balkans. Its uniqu Mostar is a gorgeous gem of the Balkans. Its unique blend of cultural diversity, riveting history and natural beauty offers an inspiring escape. I traveled solo in Mostar for 2 days, exploring the Old Town along with day trips. Mostar's main attraction is the bridge jumping tradition.

The iconic Stari Most is the symbol of Mostar and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in Balkan Islamic architecture in the 16th century, its height is 24 m (78 ft 9 in). The bridge connects the two sides of the city divided by the Neretva River. During the Balkan War, the bridge was destroyed. However, it became rebuilt in 2004 with the stones from the original bridge. The bridge is steep and slippery with crowds often on it. So, wear good shoes and be aware when taking in its incredible views of the city and river.

The main attraction in Mostar is watching the tradition of locals jumping off the Stari Most into the river. This began in 1664 as a rite-of-passage for 16-year-old boys. Today, young men from the Mostar Diving Club take the plunge. Leading up to the plunge, assistants gather donations from the crowds.

Here, east meets west with a fascinating blend of Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian influences. However, wounds from the 90’s Bosnian War are still healing.
