Tucson Arizona desert

In the heart of the unique Sonoran Desert is the prolific Tucson Botanical Gardens.  This is a must-see destination when in the Tucson area.  And especially in the spring when the colorful desert spring comes vibrantly alive.  Both times that I visited Tucson, I made it a priority to spend a day at this garden and be inspired.  Here are the Tucson Botanical Gardens highlights.

This massive ecoregion spreads over south western U.S. in Arizona, California and northwestern Mexico.  The Sonoran Desert is unique because its climate has a subtropical warm winter and 2 seasons of rainfall.  It gets more rain from the nearby Pacific Ocean.

This creates a unique plethora of endemic plants and animals, for example, the iconic saguaro (Carnegiea gigantea) and organ pipe cactus (Stenocereus thurberi).  Other plants endemic include the barrel cactus, prickly pear cactus, soaptree yucca, ocotillo, desert ironwood and Joshua Tree.   There are diverse animals, such as, coyotes, bobcats, Sonoran toad, cactus wren, banded gila monster, snakes and cactus ferruginous pygmy owl.

This desert wonderland consists of 5.5 acres, with 17 different gardens.  Paths connect you to these eclectic gardens.  October through April is the ideal time because the temperature is cooler.   Even more, the spring bloom is from mid-February to mid-June, peaking from mid-March to late April.   The gardens were founded in 1964 by the horticulturist, Harrison G. Yocum.

There was a gorgeous mountain lion there in an enclosure to observe. And I saw a wild boar and iguanas throughout the gardens. Also, for lunch or drink, there is the Café Botanica here for a nice homemade meal.  The organic cooking here focuses on sustainable ingredients and using the gardens for food and spices. Additionally, the Gardens Giftshop offers garden and home specialty products and creative artwork from the locals.

What is Gardens’ Horticultural Therapy Program at Tucson Botanical Gardens?

In this program, trained individuals in the Therapy Outreach bring hands-on gardening and nature activities to residents of nursing homes and assisted living facilities.  This is based on the principles that nature is healing and therapeutic. Especially gardening enables the connection with nature and a sense of purpose.

With the 17 different gardens throughout the complex, there is something to see here any time of the year.  However, the spring bloom is the zenith and if you have a chance visit then.  Overall, the abundant flora and fauna here reminds us, that the Sonora desert is an unlikely ecoregion of prolific diversity and resilient life.
