Patagonia’s Stunning Ushuaia and Tierra del Fuego National Park

by Trudy Wendelin, L.Ac

As the “World’s Southernmost City,” Ushuaia, is a hub for travel to Antarctica.  Also, it’s a gateway to the Patagonia’s Tierra del Fuego National Park. As an Acupuncturist-at-Sea, I spent a day in Ushuaia while on a World Cruise heading for Antarctica.  Additionally, I took a daytrip to the nearby Tierra del Fuego National Park. So, read on to learn about the Ushuaia travel attractions.

Ushuaia – “World’s Most Southernmost City”

As the capital city of the Tierra del Fuego Province, Ushuaia is a tourist hub for southern South America and Antarctica.  It lies on the Beagle Channel with its own wide Ushuaia Harbor.  As a port-of-call, cruisers can get of the ship and reach the town center in a quick, 10-minute walk.  The town’s stunning backdrop is the snow-capped Martial Mountain Range.  Here the dramatic Andes Mountain Chain stops at the Beagle Channel.  Everywhere you turn is literally a “National Geographic Moment.”  As a hub for adventure, the outdoor activities options are endless, such as, skiing, hiking, sailing and kayaking.  Also, Ushuaia’s population is roughly 77,000 people.

The native people inspired the name Tierra de Fuego “Land of Fire” because they built fires to communicate across islands.   I enjoyed a day touring at this pristine park.  Just 11 km (6.8 mi) from Usuaia, either bus or train travels to Tierra de Fuego National Park.  Also, here are the southern termini of both the Pan-American Highway and End of the World Train.  The park is on the Argentine part of the island of Tierra del Fuego.  Additionally, it’s in the ecoregion of Patagonic Forest and Altos Andes, a part of the subantarctic forest.

Overall, the park scenery is stunning with teal lakes, waterfalls, lush green forests, mountains and glaciers.  I walked along the shores of Roca Lake.  Another landmark is the Fagnano Lake.  The Forests of Antarctic Beech, Lena Beech and Coihue in the lower elevations carpet the gorgeous green landscapes.  Also, the Sendra Costera (Coastal Path) is a popular hiking trail in the park, connecting Ensenada and Lapataia Bays.

Signpost for Southernmost Motorway on the Planet

At the park, this is the most southern point of the longest motorway on the planet. In other words, this is the farthest south anyone can drive in the Western Hemisphere.   I got a photo op here in front of the iconic sign.  Also, I walked along the boardwalk taking me to the bay, seeing a fjord.  This fjord bay area is surrounded with pristine forests, sea birds and cold water animals.  For example, species here are the Andean condor, Magellanic woodpecker, austral parakeet, red foxes and guanaco, a small South American camel.
