Po Lin Monastery is majestically nestled in the Hong Kong mountains on Lantau Island. Embedded by mountains, lush forests, granite and the South China sea below, its setting is an eloquent balance of Chinese Feng Shui and the natural elements. This area is known as the “Buddhist Kingdom in the South.” I have been here twice, once in fog and the other time with sunny skies. I love sharing tips. So, read on to discover my Po Lin Monastery highlights for your own travel planning.

Bus or Tram to the Monastery

At Tung Chung MTR Station there is both a bus or cable car that goes to the monastery. For bus, take the Lantau Bus 23 to Ngong Ping Bus Terminus (45 minutes) Or take the Ngong Ping Cable Car, taking about 25 minutes. Both times, I took the cable car with fantastic views of the water, mountains and city.

    The Big Buddha

    Big Buddha

The most popular site at Hong Kong’s Po Lin Monastery is “Big Buddha.” It’s the world’s largest seated bronze Buddha statue. It sits on a lotus throne, standing 26 meters high and weighing 250 tons, made up of 202 bronze pieces. This marvel is one of the “Ten Engineering Wonders in Hong Kong.” Serenely, he sits atop the hill, reached by many steep stairs.

Also, the walkway around the Buddha offers a 360-degree panoramic view of the monastery and valley below. Exquisitely, statues of gods and goddesses face the Buddha making offerings. The man-made sculptures are designed to blend in harmony with their natural surroundings. Inside the Buddha is a repository of relics and art to browse. Most importantly, I suggest you get here early, as the crowds close in by 10 am.

    Mahavira Hall

Mahavira Hall – Po Lin Monastery

The colorful Mahavira Hall is a meeting place for prayer and ritual. Also, in front, there’s an incense burning platform for personal worship or ritual. Inside statues of Buddha, Luo Han and Guan Yin silently sit with Buddhist texts and various relics. Consequently, many visitors pray at the altar or give respects according to their spiritual beliefs.

Behind Mahavira hall, there’s plans to construct a Ten Thousand Buddha Temple to accommodate these statues. There’s, also, a small village for shopping and restaurants. The monastery offers delicious vegetarian meals. Overall, there are statues, gardens and artwork with much to showcase Buddhist spirituality.

Wisdom Path of 8 Heart Sutras

    Wisdom Path

The most delightful surprise for me, often goes unmentioned regarding this magnificent setting. I was getting ready to leave, thinking that I had seen most of the sites. Then, I notice an arrow pointing to the “Wisdom Path,” just a 20 walk from the center. Hmm, this sounds like something not to miss. My walk is pleasant, along this mysterious path. Upon arrival, I am struck with an immediate sense of surprise! This is going to be the highlight of the day.

    Wisdom Path

The Wisdom Path lies on a hillside, with a panoramic view of Mount Lantao. It displays 38 wooden columns (8-10 meters tall) with calligraphic inscriptions of Heart Sutras, by the renowned Chinese scholar, Professor Jao Tsungi. Overall, they’re laid out in the shape of a figure 8, symbolizing Infinity, a key concept from the Heart Sutras.

I excitedly follow the path of 8, taking in the energies of these powerful relics. For me, this walk on the Wisdom Path is the most spiritual experience of the whole monastery. There are less than 20 people at this site and quiet wisdom lingers. This allows me to hear the heart and become even more inspired to learn more about the Heart Sutras. Intriguingly, it seems the calligraphic symbols embody the wisdom and helps to illuminate all who walk this path. Above all, do not miss the Wisdom Path. Also, there’s a beautiful path continuing on from this site to Lantau Peak.

    Enjoy Po Lin Monastery!

Overall, Asia is home to thousands of Buddhist Temples. However, Po Lin Monastery is a special one that offers eclectic ways to experience Buddhism and Hong Kong culture. You can reach it by bus, tram or a walking path, all offering a unique journey into this spiritual community. Whatever your spiritual beliefs, this beautiful setting offers a nice harmony of Buddhist compassion and heart-felt fun, from which to explore this culture and nature.

If ever there was a time to reconnect with America If ever there was a time to reconnect with American Democracy, it is NOW! Boston is the perfect place known as the "Cradle of Liberty," with many firsts for the USA.

I decided to unplug from the current political reality and celebrate the U.S. historical roots on Independence Day 2025! I visited many historic sites on Boston's Freedom Trail, listened to 2 readings of the Declaration of Independence, interacted with people in colonial costumes and parades.

It was a bittersweet day with many tears and the realization that I have taken democracy for granted. However, I will never let that happen again! I feel more patriotic than ever to make sure the blood, sweat and tears over the last 249 years were not in vain.

Here are the 19 historic sites on the Freedom Trail. For more details, check out my blog:

The world-famous Gouda cheese is named after a cit The world-famous Gouda cheese is named after a city in the heart of the Dutch green lands. Imagine this, the city is just as delectable as the cheese. I am thrilled to share my Gouda Netherlands cheese tour highlights at the city and cheese farm. So, read on and discover reasons why Gouda is the ultimate foodie and cultural tour.

The city Gouda lies in the province of South Holland in the Netherlands. It’s named after the Gouwe River that it surrounds. The city became known for the Gouda cheese traded in its market square. Furthermore, Gouda is famous for stroopwafels, grachten or canals, smoking pipes and its 15th century city hall. Originally, it was a marshland in the 13th century. Later, a canal was built and its estuary became a harbor.

On the Vracar plateau, the Church of Saint Sava is On the Vracar plateau, the Church of Saint Sava is the largest Orthodox church in the Balkans and second largest in the world. Saint Sava is the founder of the Serbian Orthodox church. The church’s construction lasted from 1935 to 1989. It became delayed by WW II and the Yugoslavian communism, that didn’t allow for building churches.

Shaped like a Greek Cross, the facade consists of white marble and granite in a Neo-Byzantine style. Its dome is one of the largest in the world. The mosaics are spectacular, with the central mosaic in the dome depicting the Ascension of Jesus.

Just 15 minutes from Mostar is the Blagaj Dervish Just 15 minutes from Mostar is the Blagaj Dervish Monastery. It sits at the source of the Buna River which flows out of a cave beneath a canyon wall. The beautiful tekke (lodge) displays Ottoman Sufi architecture from the 15th century.

The white building reflects on the turquoise river. Inside you’ll find a small mosque, guest rooms and mausoleums. Dervishes of the Sufi orders stayed here for spiritual retreats over the centuries. Today, it is open for tourist of all faiths to learn about this sacred site and the Sufi tradition.

We explored the riverside and view of Blagaj from across the river. Also, with our shoes off, we enjoyed an indoor tour of the monastery.
