Captivating Ha Long Bay, Vietnam Junk Boat Cruise and Seafood Markets

Vietnam’s Ha Long Bay inspires the imagination, with mystery that’s best experienced on a Junk Boat Cruise. Ha Long Bay means “Bay of the Descending Dragons.” As an Acupuncturist-at-Sea, I visited this bay many times and love sharing tips. So, read on and discover why you should experience a Ha Long Bay Junk Boat Cruise and seafood market.

According to myth, the dragons dropped jewels and jade from their mouths to form the 2000 limestone islands dotting the bay. Many people see the resemblance to the hanging islands in the science fiction movie, Avatar. Amidst emerald waters, the limestone islands majestically rise from the bay, enswathed with jade rainforests. These islands are called karsts, a topography formed from dissolution of soluble rock (limestone). Furthermore, below these are caves and sinkholes for drainage.

3-Hour Junk Boat Cruise and Cave Viewing

Upon arrival, I set up a 3-hour Junk Boat (old fishing boat) Cruise to explore these enchanting islands. There are many small boats that take you into the shadows of these towering rock formations.

The junk boats are very simple without amenities, carrying about 50 people with an upper deck to observe the surroundings. We sail into the limestone labyrinth escaping into a surreal flow. The lush, viridescent islands, reflect on the water as a green dream, refreshing the mind with pristine nature.

Out of the shadows the light reveals gold and gray limestone formations with lush forests, all reflecting on the water.

We observed interesting floating villages during the cruise. Many of them are fishing villages, that offer platforms with small markets selling colorful produce and seafood. Cua Van Village is the largest one with more than 300 houseboats.

    Thien Cung Cave

Mid cruise, we sail to the mythic cave called Thien Cung Cave or “Heavenly Palace.” It was just discovered in 1996 on Dau Go Island. Legend goes that it was the setting for a weeklong wedding between the Dragon King and the mortal girl, May.

We get off our junk boat on the island, climbing many steep stairs to this magnificent cave. The gothic interior with its high ceiling is stunning. It’s adorned by ancient stalagmites and stalactites frozen in time, as a geological masterpiece. The path is extraordinary with inspiration around each corner. The lighting showcases the beautiful colors of blue, gold, green and aquamarine from minerals among the subterranean spring.

Magical Islands of Ha Long Bay

From the cave, we get back on the junk boat floating through the limestone rock formations. It’s interesting to observe the intriguing shapes and colors of the different islands. Many are named according to their shapes, like Stone Dog and Teapot Islets. The mythology of Dragons dropping jade islands comes to life here.

I feel the surreal dimensions as we make our way throughout these magical islands. Anything seems possible in this enchanting realm of nature’s wonder. Feeling the many nuances of Vietnam’s Ha Long Bay, I am sad to end this journey. However, there are always seafood markets to explore on land afterwards…

    Ha Long Bay Seafood Markets

Exploring the Ha Long Bay seafood markets is the perfect complement to the junk boat cruise. It is quite the adventurous experience. You will see things, beyond the imagination. They are overflowing with a cacophony of seafood and Vietnamese chatter among the locals. This is where the land meets the sea and you experience the heart of the Ha Long Bay culture. My YouTube Video below says it best.

    Final Thoughts

I was fortunate to return many times and never grew tired of observing the dream world of Vietnam’s Ha Long Bay. Overall, it’s easy to embrace all moods and transforming adventures through its hauntingly beautiful islands. I am so grateful for being in the “Bay of Descending Dragons” wake. If your travels bring you to Ha Long Bay, feel free to leave tips or suggestions below.

If ever there was a time to reconnect with America If ever there was a time to reconnect with American Democracy, it is NOW! Boston is the perfect place known as the "Cradle of Liberty," with many firsts for the USA.

I decided to unplug from the current political reality and celebrate the U.S. historical roots on Independence Day 2025! I visited many historic sites on Boston's Freedom Trail, listened to 2 readings of the Declaration of Independence, interacted with people in colonial costumes and parades.

It was a bittersweet day with many tears and the realization that I have taken democracy for granted. However, I will never let that happen again! I feel more patriotic than ever to make sure the blood, sweat and tears over the last 249 years were not in vain.

Here are the 19 historic sites on the Freedom Trail. For more details, check out my blog:

The world-famous Gouda cheese is named after a cit The world-famous Gouda cheese is named after a city in the heart of the Dutch green lands. Imagine this, the city is just as delectable as the cheese. I am thrilled to share my Gouda Netherlands cheese tour highlights at the city and cheese farm. So, read on and discover reasons why Gouda is the ultimate foodie and cultural tour.

The city Gouda lies in the province of South Holland in the Netherlands. It’s named after the Gouwe River that it surrounds. The city became known for the Gouda cheese traded in its market square. Furthermore, Gouda is famous for stroopwafels, grachten or canals, smoking pipes and its 15th century city hall. Originally, it was a marshland in the 13th century. Later, a canal was built and its estuary became a harbor.

On the Vracar plateau, the Church of Saint Sava is On the Vracar plateau, the Church of Saint Sava is the largest Orthodox church in the Balkans and second largest in the world. Saint Sava is the founder of the Serbian Orthodox church. The church’s construction lasted from 1935 to 1989. It became delayed by WW II and the Yugoslavian communism, that didn’t allow for building churches.

Shaped like a Greek Cross, the facade consists of white marble and granite in a Neo-Byzantine style. Its dome is one of the largest in the world. The mosaics are spectacular, with the central mosaic in the dome depicting the Ascension of Jesus.

Just 15 minutes from Mostar is the Blagaj Dervish Just 15 minutes from Mostar is the Blagaj Dervish Monastery. It sits at the source of the Buna River which flows out of a cave beneath a canyon wall. The beautiful tekke (lodge) displays Ottoman Sufi architecture from the 15th century.

The white building reflects on the turquoise river. Inside you’ll find a small mosque, guest rooms and mausoleums. Dervishes of the Sufi orders stayed here for spiritual retreats over the centuries. Today, it is open for tourist of all faiths to learn about this sacred site and the Sufi tradition.

We explored the riverside and view of Blagaj from across the river. Also, with our shoes off, we enjoyed an indoor tour of the monastery.
