Damajagua Waterfalls Dominican Republic

The 27 Waterfalls of Damajagua is a uniquely fun eco-adventure in northern Dominican Republic.  It includes jungle hiking, along with canyoneering and jumping or sliding down waterfalls.  There are 3 different levels to meet your physical and time limits.  As an Acupuncturist on a cruise ship, I joined a fun crew tour from Amber Cove.  We did the shortest tour with 7 waterfalls and waterslides.  It was still plenty of an adventure for me.  Read on to learn about our half-day Damajagua Waterfalls excursion.

In northern Dominican Republic near Puerto Plata are the 27 Waterfalls of Damajagua.  The Damajagua River flows through the jungle and canyons, cascading into this series of waterfalls. Overall, the eco-adventure includes canyoneering, jumping and sliding down the falls.  The jumps vary from 1 – 8 metres.  All tours require official guides for 3 different levels:  7, 12 or 27 Waterfalls.  The 12 waterfalls is the most popular and balanced choice.

How to Plan for Adventure:

The main things visitors need to consider is time and physical limits for your guided tour.  All tours begin at the welcome center that provides you with helmets, lifejackets and water shoes.  Come ready in your swimwear along with sunscreen and quick-drying clothing. I stored my phone and valuables in a locker.

Each tour provides a photographer/videographer.  Afterwards, you can buy the digital photos/videos if you choose.  I took my waterproof GoPro and bought their media to create my content.

Cruise Ship Crew Tour

I joined a large group of about 30 crew members from my cruise ship for the adventure.  After getting our lifejackets, helmets and water shoes we walked mostly upwards for a half hour to our first jump.  Our adventure involved mostly waterslides with small jumps less than 3 metres.

I am a cautious middle-aged woman and I felt totally safe.  We swam through canyons in cold, milky blue waters.  The waterslides were fun and smooth.  Overall, it was a fun day for everyone.
