Nestled in the idyllic countryside of Prince Edward Island is the setting for the 1908 novel, Anne of Green Gables.  Touring the iconic farm, you intimately sense the muse for L.M. Montgomery’s classic novel.  Even more, nearby are the idyllic countryside and seaside treasures fertile for any imagination.   Fans of this legendary orphan, Anne must experience the heartwarming Anne of Green Gables House Tour.

In October 2022 I toured the Anne of Green Gables farm a second time and observed the unfortunate damage to Lucy M. Montgomery’s woods from Hurricane Fiona.

At Anne of Green Gables Museum and farm, I became absolutely enchanted with the setting and inspired to finally read the novel.  Its author, L.M. Montgomery, lived with her Grandparents at this farm without her mother, who died when she was an infant.  A young orphan girl in Cavendish, that was accidentally given (supposed to be a boy) to an older couple inspired the author’s protagonist, Anne.

Many of her characters in the book became inspired by Cavendish citizens, that she knew personally.  Later, L.M. Montgomery wrote an 8-book Anthology series on Anne of Green Gables.   Also, Anne with an E is a popular Netflix series following the adventures of this imaginative orphan.

Visitors go inside the home and walk the gardens and farm and guided tours are available.  I, however, savored an independent tour at my own pace.  There are many placards and exhibits to learn about the author, L.M. Montgomery and the setting for her Muse amidst the farm, trails and home.

Lover’s Lane – Anne of Green Gables Farm

Green Gables Heritage Place Trails

I enjoyed walking the trails, inspired and written about in her novels, such as, Lover’s Lane, Balsam Hollow Trail and the Haunted Woods.  Lover’s Lane is a short walking path, leading to the Balsam Hollow Trail, approximately 1 mile long.  In addition, the Haunted Woods take you on a walk through the serene, spruce shadows, imagined as haunted.  Walking on these trails, you smell the pine and wildflowers in the forest breeze. Also, if you listen carefully, the tree’s windy branches tell the story of an orphan girl’s dreams…

The plant life of these enchanting woods is plentiful with Red Maple and Red Spruce trees, ferns, herbs and wildflowers, such as, Painted Trillium, Daisies, Wild Lily of the Valley, Stemless Lady’s Slipper, Creeping Buttercups and Orchids.

Sandstone Red Cliffs of PEI

Red Sandstone Seacliffs of PEI

Additionally, driving through PEI’s countryside and shoreline, travelers find the soil and cliffs a cinnamon red.  This phenomenon occurs from iron oxide rusting by air.  I went to a beach and observed the red sandstone cliffs.  This geological evolution is fascinating. Simply put, the Appalachian Mountains used to stand in PEI and gradually wore down during the Ice Age by glaciers, leaving behind the sandstone.  Because its soft, the red stone easily erodes by wind and water, sculpting exquisite shapes and monuments along the shoreline.

Overall, Anne of Green Gables House Tour

This pastoral island is one of my favorite places, that I have ever been.  It penetrated a deeply healing impression on my spirit.  Is it any wonder that L.M. Montgomery was inspired from this island as the muse to her heartwarming stories? PEI is a wholesome escape, where innocence and kindness still play with the imagination. Eventually, its charm gets under your skin, so you return home a better person, just by experiencing the quintessence of this charming island.

It is pretty worth enough for me. Personally, if all website owners and bloggers made good content as
