About Greenland

Greenland is the world’s largest island in North America and is a part of the Kingdom of Denmark or Danish Realm. The capital and largest city in Greenland is Nuuk. It was supposedly named Greenland by the Norseman, Erik the Red, to attract more people to live there. Southern Greenland lies south of its neighboring country, Iceland. So, the southern tip near the coastlines is surprisingly mild. For example, you can experience temperatures in the 60’s in the summer months in the southern regions. I included my Greenland Travel Guides below about my experiences on Greenland Cruises. My ship cruised through Prince Christian Sound and stopped at the Greenland ports, Qaqortoq and Nanortalik.

Most of the residents in Greenland are Inuit people that migrated from Canada. The lowest temperature ever recorded in the northern hemisphere is near the Greenland Ice Sheet. The massive Greenland Ice Sheet covers 80% of Greenland and is the world’s second largest ice sheet. In comparison, the largest is the Antarctic Ice Sheet. The ice sheet in Greenland is so massive that the weight of it lowered the elevation of the inlands. The average thickness of the ice sheet is 1.5 km (.9 mi). The Greenland Ice Sheet is more vulnerable to Climate Change than the Antarctic Ice Sheet.
