One of my favorite cherry blossom destinations of my life was at Tottori Hanakairo Flower Park. This is the largest flower park in Japan with majestic Mt. Daisen as a backdrop. About Tottori Prefecture
The Tottori Prefecture is the least populated region in Japan. Tottori city lies on the Sea of Japan in the western part of the country. The city is most known for the Tottori Sand Dunes. These high dunes stretch along the sea as a striking contrast to the bright blue waters. The dunes were created over eons by the Chiyo River and sea winds. Part of the dunes lie in San’in Kaigan National Park.
The Tottori Hanakairo Flower Park is the largest flower park in Japan, just 90 miles from Tottori city. As a backdrop to the park looms Mt. Daisen. This dormant stratovolcano on the Sea of Japan rises to a summit at 1,729 m (5,673 ft). Referred to as a “Mini Mt Fuji,” Mt Daisen offers stunning scenery and activities with less crowds.
How to Get to Tottori Hanakairo Flower Park:
I took a tour bus from the seaport Tottori for a 90-mile drive to the flower park. The nearest train station is Yonago Station. From the station is a free, 25-minute shuttle bus to the park.
Tottori Japan Hanakairo Flower Park Tour
This 50-hectare flower park is open all year-round, however, the springtime is the best. It is closed on Tuesdays and open various time, depending on time of year. I was lucky to be there at the height of the Sakura Season. This was one of the best cherry blossom destinations of my life. However, it was a rainy day. However, it was a rainy day. So, I didn’t get a clear view of Mt. Daisen On a sunny day you can see Mt Daisen looming behind the Flower Dome.
Flower Dome, Zone and Valley Highlights
The modern Flower Dome is a 69-foot transparent glass hemisphere. The steamy dome is filled with orchids, palm trees and a plethora of exotic flowers. The Flower Zone is a 1-km long covered walkway encircling the dome. From the elevated view you can see down into the Flower Valley, which inspired me to go down there. The Flower Valley was my favorite area for the cherry blossoms. I loved being surrounded by the color therapy with the pink cherry blossoms and kaleidoscope of tulips.
Flower Hill is also another highlight of the park, carpeted in vibrant fields of flowers with majestic views of Mt Daisen on a clear day. Also, the European Gardens display more unique, vibrant flowerbeds. The Moonlight Flower Garden is seasonally open from sunset to 9 pm. It illuminates the trees and flowers for a nighttime, lit-up perspective.
Being 50 hectares, the park offers the Flower Train and Flower Carts for a small fee.

If you love flowers, this park is a must-see destination. Each season has something unique to offer. However, spring is probably the best for flowers in full bloom. I do regret missing the views of Mt. Daisen. I would love to return to Tottori for the volcano views and the sand dunes.
